A life in ten lamps
A schoolteacher who became a municipal commissioner — and a commissioner who became a teacher again, this time of Vethathiriam, for forty years.
Born on Monday 25 May, the eldest son of Kanagasabai and Meenambal. His mother died when he was ten, and his stepmother Dheivaanaiammal raised him. At the Karaikal government school his languages were French and Tamil.
Teacher’s training at Kundu Palayam, Pondicherry, in 1958–59; then a first posting to the government elementary school at Pandacholanallur, under headmaster E. Dhanaboopathi. A place unknown to him — he won it over with strict discipline and excellent teaching.
He married Pakkiriyammal, known to all as Kannamma. Four sons followed: Kanaga Thiyumeny in 1965, Kanaga Arun in 1972, Kanaga Inian in 1980 and Kanaga Gnana Guru in 1982.
Now in the revenue department at Karaikal, he took immediate legal action to abolish illicit liquor — and stayed impartial while doing it.
He joined a discourse given by Vethathiri Maharishi at Seemaan Swamy Mutt, Karaikal. His spiritual quest was quenched there, and he remained a disciple for the rest of his life.
Taking charge of Kottucherry municipality, he was close at hand for the Maharishi’s special discourses at the Raja Gopala Pillai rice mill. Those regular meetings made the bond between master and disciple.
As commissioner he arrested and punished even his own relatives for selling illicit liquor. Powerful politicians joined hands, and he was transferred to Pondicherry — a punishment, not a credit.
From the L3 government quarters at Lawspet he ran a meditation centre in his own home, and spent his weekends travelling to give lectures on introspection — until 1995.
Retired, he moved to Erode to edit two magazines, wrote a column called ‘Thavam’ for a third, and helped open meditation centres at Bhavani, Chennimalai, Kumarapalayam and Anthiyur.
Unwell, he kept travelling to centres across Tamil Nadu, preaching what he had realised and followed. His master passed in March; on 2 May 2006 he followed, at Thirunelveli — as he had wished.

He edited Anboli and Erode Manavalakalaignan, so this part is laid out like one of his issues: a poem up front, the contents beside it.
